Sadly I was on staff only one year, but I have some great memories. Was anyone here at EB in 1974? _________________ Matt Mitchell

1974 was my first year ever at Emerald Bay. I was a unit leader with Troop 106 (I would later be on staff in 1976). I remember Jeff Nordhaus, who I think was Handicraft Director. He was the O/A chief who tapped me out. We had our ordeal that same evening (among the last to do so, by the way - the Lodge changed it so O/A tap outs and ordeals would only be on the mainland). Other 1974 staff I recall: Henry Barry, Frank Walsh, Dave Redell and of course, Field Sports Director Steve Kofahl. I still remember very well him on the rifle range shooting a score of 21 while blindfolded! Back in the day, everyone had to shoot from the prone position. As anyone that goes to Camp nowadays knows, everyone is sitting at a table, shooting a benched rifle.
Hope that stirs some memories for you - and hopefully you can see Camp again sometime - if you haven't been since '74, it is a whole new world - but the spirit remains the same. _________________

| 1974 was my first year on staff. I was there as a camper and was involved in Rugged-E. I believe Jim Marak (the older of the brothers) was the Rugged-E director. He asked us if anyone would like to stay on staff, as they had a need in the kitchen. I was the who ended up staying (probably because nobody else could get permission from their parents). So I worked in the kitchen for the last two weeks of the summer. Came back in 1975 working in the kitchen, then half way through the summer in 1976 as the Dining Hall Director, and finally again in 1981 as Head Commissioner. |

Summer of 74 - I remember that! [Feb 25, 2010 11:28am] |

Dear Willie, John and others,
I certainly remember the summer of '74 - that was my first year on staff at EB (I think). I was working in the kitchen for the first half of the summer, and was dining hall director in the summer of '75. (also,I was a Hobie Cat driver whenever I could get free!)
Great memories! |
